The Dukes of Courland also had a summer palace by Rastrelli, about 40 kilometers to the southeast, called Rundāle Palace. I would have assumed that the local authorities in Jelgava would want to make the old palace more of an attraction worth visiting, with a museum and things to do there, but apparently not. We walked over to it, across the river from the centre of the town, and through the park, but there is not a lot to see inside. From the exterior, it's a beautiful early-modern building, and impressive to look at. Jelgava Palace is the largest Baroque style palace in the Baltic states, the greatest work of famous Russian court architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli and one of the few cultural monuments remained in Jelgava.

The palace island has romantic canals, bridges and palace buildings, and the Governor's Island makes it one of the most beautiful parks in Jelgava. There are also several noble trees in the park - two chestnuts, an oak, a gray aspen. Jelgava Palace isn’t the only building in the city that offers up a hint of old grandeur. It shares its late Baroque design with the Museum of History and Art in the city centre. The building was constructed in 1775 and actually became the first university in Latvia, which you can kind of see in its architecture I think.
